P1W2 – Blend Modes, Type Effects

Blending Modes

penny-blending-modes

I chose two images from this week’s shooting that I liked, but I also felt were incomplete. The first was of a sunset at the railroad tracks. The other was a close-up, shallow-focus shot on some pennies someone had dropped in the parking lot.

The first layer is the pennies, and the second is the sunset photo in Overlay blend mode. After this, I used a layer mask and slightly opaque brush to highlight the areas I wanted most to show up from the pennies.

The words also use overlay blends; “Hidden” is in black, and “Treasures” in white. This enabled these words to “hide” within the sunset and the penny.

Type Effects

This was another one of those photos that I liked, but I also thought felt incomplete on its own. It was right after discussing aperture and shutter speed in class, and after the class had vacated. I had been fumbling around with the settings on my camera, and wanted to pull off a shallow focus shot – so I took a picture of what was right in front of me. I think it turned out well for this assignment, especially as a backdrop to a Design/Communication-based message.

I followed tutorial 17 exactly in order to get this effect. I chose light and dark grey for the alternating lines of text – this worked out well because the dark text fades into the background in the bottom left corner, and the light text in the top right. In the center, when the light hits the table, you can see both alternating.

I love what you did with the pennies. So cool, I just couldn’t see the treasures part that well.

Really like your blends. The one with type reminds me of some kind of university advertisement. Very professional looking, got a great purposeful feeling to it. I really really like your first blend. First, I love sunset photos and the colors they bring out. I also love the pennies photo, it rings great repetition with your color and the text works really really well.
